A Small Bit Of Bad News :( (but it is not too bad)

While cleaning out the rocker area I uncovered some severely rusted metal under the fiberglass, who would have known there would be metal in a fiberglass car 🙂  The good news as major as it looks it will only set the project back a day or so and about $400.

Floyd – Week 5 Progress Update

Week 5 has brought a lot of progress. I fired up the sand blast cabinet and have started working on the smaller metal items.

I also began doing fiberglass crack grinding and started using the West System Epoxy Resin to start body repair. The fiberglass has turned out to much easier than I would have expected.

I also ordered a new primer spray gun and picked up 2 gallons of All U Need high build primer/sealer.

Floyd – Week 3 – The car formally known as Pink Floyd

Week 3 has been more soda blasting. So far I have used 500 lbs of baking soda.

I have decided to start going to weekly progress updates. Still removing pain and ordering more parts.

Pink Floyd Day 16 (FUN WITH STRIPPER)

OK, get your mind out of the gutter, I meant paint stripper and not real strippers 🙂  I took today to work with chemical stripper to get some of the hard to reach areas ahead of another day of soda blasting.

Pink Floyd Day 14

Made some more progress media blasting today.

Pink Floyd Day 13

Day 13 started the Media Blasting with baking soda. It is quite messy but very cool!

Pink Floyd Day 11

On Day 11 Pink Floyd is starting to become a little less pink and purple. I started using a chemical stripper but it was taking way too long and it is very messy so I decided to try out my new Eastwood Soda Blaster. It is just like a sand blaster but it uses baking soda as the stripping media and it is not harmful to the fiberglass. So far it seems pretty easy, it was getting late but I almost have the rear fender complete and it is turning out very nice. I bought eight 50lb bags of soda form Harbor Freight (that cleaned both stores out) so I will see how far that gets me.

Pink Floyd Day 9

Day 9 is complete. We removed the engine and transmission and prepared the engine for the new owner to pick up tomorrow.

Pink Floyd Day 8

Day number 8 was the magic day, the body has been separated from the chassis. My friends Ray and Carol along with my wife completed the body removal today without any major incident. I thought today would be an easy day but the body bolts turned out to be very challenging. Some broke, some stripped, so we had to grind off 3 while trying to be sensitive to the amount of heat we were generating around the fiberglass.

We used an engine lift with with the boom fully extended then we put a chain connected across to each of the two lower convertible top brackets and hooked the center of the chain with the lift. While my wife ran the lift while  Ray and I each grabbed a side of the front end to balance it. Once it cleared the engine we rolled the engine lift and body sideways to clear the chassis then rolled the body dolly in it’s place and lowered it right down. Having 4 people and a engine lift was good but we probably should have has one more person for the front end. Lesson learned for the body install in a few months.

Overall it turned out to much less painless then I thought it would be.

Pink Floyd Day 7

Day number 7 was a short night. We finished up removing the last of the bumper brackets then I built the body dolly. I had to build it a little taller to be able to roll the engine lift under the edge rails. Finished checking the lift for alignment and tomorrow the body comes off.
